TALS' staff member Samantha Sanchez was selected as one of 30 leaders in the nonprofit sector who are in their 30s. The "30 in their 30s" are a diverse set of individual who have excelled in serving the middle Tennessee community. She was selected by the Center for Nonprofit Management and The Tennessean for this honor.
The Tennessee Bar Association each year recognizes lawyers and law students who have shown exceptional commitment to increasing access to justice for individuals and communities through its Public Service Awards. The awards recognize pro bono service in three categories: work performed by an attorney employed by an organization primarily involved in providing legal representation to the indigent, work performed by a private attorney and work performed by a law student volunteer.
Justice Bivins Elected by Colleagues to Serve as Chief Justice of Tennessee Supreme Court
The Supreme Court elected Justice Jeff Bivins to be the next chief justice of the Court. Justice Bivins was unanimously elected by the Court. His term that began September 1. Justice Bivins was appointed to the Court in 2014 by Gov. Bill Haslam. Prior to assuming that position, he was a judge on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals from August 2011 until July 2014.
KNOXVILLE – For over 50 years, the lawyers of Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) have been zealously advocating for the rights of Knoxville’s most vulnerable citizens, making sure that they receive fairness in the justice system regardless of how much money they have.
The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services' office will be closed Tuesday, August 30 - Friday, September 2, 2016 while TALS hosts the 2016 Equal Justice University conference in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The TALS' free legal helpline, 1-844-HELP4TN, will be partially staffed during this time. The office will remained closed through Monday, September 5, 2016 for the Labor Day holiday. TALS will re-open Tuesday, September 6, 2016.
Kirsten Jacobson is a Staff Attorney at TALS. She focuses on leveraging technology to provide new legal service delivery models and increase access to legal care for low-income Tennesseans. She is the site administrator for TN Free Legal Answers. Kirsten joined TALS as an Equal Justice Works Fellow in September 2016. During her two year fellowship, Kirsten developed the Legal Wellness Checkup, a preventive and strengths-based approach to managing every day legal risks.
KNOXVILLE (September 7, 2016) – Terry J. Woods, who recently retired from Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET), has been honored by the Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) for her 15 years as LAET’s Knoxville Pro Bono Project Director. Ms. Woods was surprised with a “Resolution of the Knoxville Bar Association” during KBA’s annual Supreme Court Dinner on September 7th.

Tennessee lawyers help thousands of clients throughout the year by providing free legal advice, but this assistance is especially celebrated and emphasized during the month of October as part of a nationwide celebration.
KNOXVILLE – Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) has completed production and distribution of a video series called “The Anytime Attorney: Legal Information On Demand 24/7.” The series addresses civil legal issues in Tennessee law such as Orders of Protection, Divorce, Rental Housing, Foreclosure, Representing Yourself in General Sessions Court, and Bill Collectors.
