TALS Announces Hughes as New Staff Attorney for Legal Help Line

 

The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) is pleased to welcome the addition of Timothy Hughes to the TALS team as the first Legal Information Line Staff Attorney.

Tim starts at TALS on January 2nd after three and half years as a staff attorney at Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS).  A graduate of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis, Tim brings experience in solo practice and with a law firm in addition to working public interest law at MALS.  Tim has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and Marketing from the University of Tennessee.

At TALS, Tim will staff the new 1-888-aLEGALz statewide toll-free legal information and referral line for Tennesseans who cannot afford a lawyer for their civil legal issues. The line will not be active until mid-January and a formal announcement will follow.

 

aLEGALz will provide FREE legal information, and referrals to low-income residents of Tennessee. The line will direct callers to legal assistance resources across Tennessee’s including legal services offices or volunteer attorney programs.

 

This project is Tennessee’s first statewide information and referral phone service dedicated to assisting low-income Tennesseans facing civil legal problems. A new statewide project of TALS, the information line will be available for citizens, judges, court clerks, and bar association staff to call for information relating to available resources to help Tennessee citizens who need a lawyer but cannot afford one.

 

The line is managed by TALS with significant input and coordination with the Tennessee Access to Justice Commission. 

 

TALS is a statewide non-profit organization seeking to build partnerships to support the delivery of effective civil legal services for low-income and elderly Tennesseans. TALS is committed to increasing equal access to justice across Tennessee. TALS is an alliance of the federally-funded legal aid programs, independent providers of civil legal services, and supporting agencies in Tennessee. TALS coordinates multiple statewide programs including the annual Equal Justice University, www.onlinetnjustice.org, www.tals.org, and legislative monitoring and training on poverty law matters.
