The Tennessee Supreme Court Announces its 4Access to Justice Goals
In the state capitol’s historic Supreme Court chambers, the Tennessee Supreme Court, Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice, Janice M. Holder, and the Chair of the Access to Justice Commission, Margaret Behm, unveiled the four over-arching goals that will guide the Court’s Access to Justice Initiative in the coming years.
Access to Justice (A2J) Goals
- To involve more lawyers and law students in meeting legal needs so that the public is better served.
- To provide greater educational opportunities and resources for policymakers, self-represented litigants, the community, lawyers, court personnel and others.
- To make the justice system more user-friendly.
- To remove barriers to access to justice, including, but not limited to, disability, language, literacy and geography.
During the announcement, Margaret Behm described the Court’s commitment to access to justice and thanked organizations including TALS for its efforts toward their shared vision for meeting vulnerable Tennesseans’ civil legal needs.
Chief Justice Holder described several of the projects that will support the A2J goals. The highlighted projects included collaboration with TALS on developing a public library/legal services partnership (also mentioned in a recent article published in the Chattanooga Times, hosting a statewide pro bono summit in Nashville (planned for January 20, 2011), and launching a new access to justice website. Among other things, this website will feature information for pro se representation, including downloadable plain-language forms, and video guides to navigating the court system. The great need for legal and pro bono services and easily accessible pro se materials were highlighted in the Court’s new access to justice video, which was also unveiled at Tuesday’s announcement.
