On Tuesday, April 15th, American Bar Association (ABA) President Jim Silkenat will visit Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) to speak to the staff members to express the ABA’s appreciation for their service in affording access to justice to their clients. One of the Association’s top priorities is access to justice, and encouraging the legal and broader community to respond to the unmet civil legal needs in disadvantaged communities. The ABA President is in Memphis at the annual invitation of Shep Tate of Martin,Tate, Morrow & Martston P.C.

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) and the Memphis Bar Association's Acess to Justice Committee presented Pamela Kelly of Law Office of Pamela Kelly with the Celebrate Pro Bono Award. Kelly is a volunteer with MALS' Pro Bono Project as well as the Memphis based Community Legal Center and the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services' Online Tennessee Justice project. This year, the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services presented the B. Riney Green Award to Russ Overby with Legal Aid Society and Beth Stricklin bates with West Tennessee Legal Services. The New Advocate of the Year Award was presented to Shayla Purifoy with Memphis Area Legal Services.
