Yeomans Honored as Ashley T. Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year

NASHVILLE – Deborah Yeomans, Managing Attorney for Legal Aid of East Tennessee’s Johnson City office, has been named the Ashley T. Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year by the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA).  The Award “recognizes an attorney for an indigent client in either civil or criminal defense who provided dedicated and outstanding services during the past year.”

Ms. Yeomans was nominated by Debra L. House, Associate Director of LAET’s Northern and Central Regions. In submitting the nomination, Ms. House wrote, “Deborah is distinguished by her willingness and zeal to undertake any new project for the betterment of our clients.  She is a mentor to those who want to learn and grow, and is a role model for others in our profession.”

Ms. Yeomans practices law primarily in the areas of domestic violence and taxes.  Among other accomplishments, she successfully argued in the Court of Appeals that the Tennessee Order of Protection statute provides that a victim of domestic violence cannot be charged with the costs of an Order of Protection.  This decision has statewide impact for countless victims of domestic violence who seek protection through the court system.

Ms. Yeomans will formally receive the Award Saturday, January 18th at TBA’s 2014 Public Service Luncheon in Nashville.
