LAET Attorney Arnold to Receive Training at National Institute

MARYVILLE (May 12, 2017) – Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) is proud to announce that staff attorney Zachary W. Arnold will participate in the prestigious National Institute for Trial Advocacy's Legal Services Corporation Grantee Lawyers (LSCO) Program. He is among thirty-two legal services attorneys from across the country who will attend this training.

“The program uses a hypothetical case for instruction in a wide variety of trial skills, including case analysis, opening statements and closing arguments, direct and cross examination of fact witnesses,” offered Mark S. Caldwell, Attorney and Resource Director of NITA. “It focuses on issues common to many legal services offices and was written specifically to provide a realistic experience during the program. (The faculty is) drawn from NITA’s best teachers.”

Mr. Arnold serves clients from LAET’s Maryville office, focusing on Family, Consumer and Housing Law. He is a 2015 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law. During law school, he clerked at the Hartsoe Law Firm in Maryville and the Ellis Law Firm in Knoxville. Prior to joining LAET in July 2016, Mr. Arnold was a criminal defense attorney with McKellar & Easter in Knoxville.

“I grew up in a very rural area of Ohio where a large percentage of the population was low-income,” said Mr. Arnold. “I have always been drawn to helping low-income people and families. I applied for the NITA training as an opportunity to expand my legal training and skills to fulfill a goal of aiding low-income people and families with legal issues.”

“NITA training is the gold standard for teaching young lawyers how to litigate,” added Jane Kopp Morris, LAET’s Managing Attorney for the Knoxville area. “Zach is already an excellent attorney. We are so pleased that he has this opportunity to sharpen his skills so he can become even better.”

Mr. Arnold will attend the week-long training late this summer in Denver, Colorado.
